In December 2006, I attended the Art Basel Miami Beach art fair as an intern for Afterall Journal. During one of my breaks I wandered the stalls, fairly overwhelmed by the onslaught of art on display. On a feminist kick, I gave myself a little mission to document each instance of “female representation” that I came across. It was an essentialist game, essentially. I included works made by female artists when I could identify them (I was moving pretty quickly). The result was this series of almost 200 snapshots.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
_______________________:___________________, A Solo Show
November 29th- December 7th, 2008
Reception: Saturday, November 29th, 8 – 11 PM
Sea and Space is offering every artist we know a solo show in late November. The largest solo show ever will feature the work of 100 artists, who will be able to list this solo show on their resume by entering their name and show title into the blanks in the central title. The show will enhance the careers of all artists, subverting the way art projects are documented and defined.
While there is no limitation on the number of works for this show, artists will be sharing limited space. Work will hang from the walls, ceilings, rolling walls, and pedestals redefining solo show presentation and practice. Work may even be leaning, with care, on someone else’s.
Many of the pieces will roll over into the next show, the holiday raffle. This fundraiser will help Sea and Space Explorations raise the application fees to attain non-profit status.

I got dressed up as feminist artist Judy Chicago for Halloween this year. In 2007, when we were preparing for the EA&ER symposium at CalArts, Elana, Theresa, and I saw Judy Chicago in person during the feminist caucus events at CAA in NYC. I remembering being spellbound by her personal transformation from au naturel hardcore Second Wave Feminist to dyed and made-up Femi-lebrity. The big hair! The tinted glasses! The legacy!!
On Halloween night, I found the perfect curly wig and glasses at Ozzie Dots on Hollywood Blvd., burgundy lip liner, a 99 cent IKEA plate from Goodwill, and some cheap-o nail polish to make the Hatshepsut plate from “The Dinner Party”. Being Judy for a night, I felt like the woman I never knew I could be.
